These days all of us designers have access to the best the world has to offer, from local design shops to the big international fairs in Paris and Milan. But even when we spend the day buying rare marble or hunting for valuable antiques, a good bargain is hard to resist. Of all the affordable shops on the market, IKEA is still our sanctuary for functional, timeless pieces at a low cost. From kitchen units to towels, IKEA has it all, and most of its products are affordable, simple in design and generally available in neutral colours. They’re not only stylish, well-considered products, they’re also good quality and versatile enough to stand the test of time. Which is why it’s no surprise that many designers, ourselves included, turn to the Swedish shop when we need something quick and inexpensive.

1. SODERHAMN sofa

Sofas are one of the biggest investments for a home and therefore one of the hardest decisions to make. Especially if we’re still in our twenties or living in rented accommodation, choosing a size and style can be a mistake we only find out about the next time we move. We love the SODERHAMN sofa: being modular, it gives you the freedom to configure the pieces whichever way suits you best, and it lets you add modules as the family grows or the living room gets bigger. It has a minimalist design with simple lines and so adapts to various styles, since the legs and covers are removable and can be changed easily, completely transforming the look of the sofa.

2. RASKOG trolley

Is it a drinks trolley? A plant stand? Spice storage? A bedside table? Who knows? This trolley reminds us of the fruit stands our grandmothers used to have in the kitchen, with the small difference that it comes in a range of colours and has the vintage touch of its rounded lines. It’s very versatile and perfect for adding (extra) storage anywhere in the house.

3. VITTSJO shelving unit

This piece is always a winner, since it looks very sophisticated for the price. Its modern, clean lines are perfect for fitting into any setting, given the endless styling opportunities. All it takes is a can of spray paint and we can get an elegant, delicate look for a feminine suite, sophisticated storage for a playroom, a contemporary unit for a study, or simply keep it as it comes.

4. SINNERLIG ceiling lamp

It’s large but visually very light and, for the price, we can hang two or three over a longer table. The bamboo is modern yet at the same time gives a space a natural, neutral feel. We love the matt black ceiling rose and cable, since they lend it the air of an expensive product, which in reality it isn’t.

5. MOSSLANDA picture ledge

It’s one of IKEA’s oldest items, available in several sizes and finishes, and perfect for any room or setting. It was originally designed as a picture ledge, but it’s a very versatile piece, with a whole collection of “hacks” and suggestions for using it in 1,001 ways around your home. We hope you find it useful.
