Grey “Ultimate Gray” and yellow “Illuminating” are the two shades Pantone has chosen for 2021. In fact, Pantone has picked two colours, something it has only done twice in 22 years. The American company has described the yellow and the grey as independent but complementary, representing their unity and, at the same time, their mutual support. “PANTONE 13-0646 Illuminating” is bright and cheerful, standing out for its liveliness and made up of a warm yellow full of sunlight. “PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray” is an emblematic colour, composed of solid, dependable elements that will be timeless, providing a thoroughly firm base. This colour conveys calm, stability and resilience. Pantone’s colours of the year aren’t only a trend: they’re also a reflection on how the world is shifting and on what the present moment needs. They believe, therefore, that this combination will help people to “strengthen themselves with energy, clarity and hope” in a world of confrontation and uncertainty. In interior design, these shades mix fun with solemnity. They’ve also been used in public spaces and in homes to express clarity and positivity. It’s hardly news for us to say we’re great fans of grey, since it’s always an excellent alternative to white for anyone wanting a soft, calm atmosphere: it’s timeless and never goes out of fashion. “Ultimate Gray” also has a calming effect and works as the perfect backdrop for most aesthetic decisions: we can change furniture, fabrics and accessories to give a space a fresh feel without having to repaint the walls. Yellow “Illuminating”, or strong yellow, is energetic and appealing, but we’d advise using it in details, since it has plenty of force and can completely overshadow other elements of the decoration. It is, on the other hand, perfect for textiles, whether a modern print, on cushions or on a throw with colourful patterns. We hope you find it useful.
